Evaluating Big Local Community Plans
During 2015 Resources for Change began working to evaluate the local plans submitted to Big Local by local communities. The plans, which are the culmination of usually at least two years hard work by members of the community, show what they propose to deliver with the budget allocated by Big Local. Each community has the potential to draw down up to £1 million over a ten year period in order to effect change in their community, and each one is unique.
Our role is to look at the plans together with any other information the community has produced; this might range from statistical information about the area to a video produced by and with local people. We then (generally) visit the community, meet the partnership of people who have signed up to manage the plan, and discuss this with them.
The role is very much that of a “critical friend” learning how and why the community has come to the conclusions in their plan, and asking them about how it will work, how local people will be involved, and most importantly, how they will know whether it has worked or not. So far we have worked in over 30 communities, and expect to do more as the remainder of the areas involved in the programme submit their plans to Big Local.
