Inspiring through Adventure Conference
The year 2016 has been designated as the Year of Adventure in Wales. By organising the conference, Visit Wales, Sport Wales and NRW wanted to celebrate the outdoor sector’s achievements and explore how they might encourage more people to make use of Wales’ natural, historical and cultural heritage in a safe and sustainable manner. There are currently real challenges being faced by society in terms of public health and wellbeing, resource scarcity and climate change. This conference was intended to look at the role adventure experiences might play in catalysing behaviour change and to challenge delegates to look at ways of using available skills and resources to inspire:
- lifelong participation in sport and physical outdoor activities;
- an environmentally sustainable outdoor sector;
- holistic training and development of volunteers, leaders, instructors and coaches;
- a cross-sector approach to partnership working.
The first day of the event celebrated what adventure has already done for the people of Wales and the impact the outdoor sector has on participation, health, wellbeing and the economy. The second day provided a chance for delegates to discuss how they can work together, to develop a sustainable and lasting legacy beyond the Year of Adventure.
The R4C team helped with the design of the conference and ran the workshops on the second day.
