Shropshire and Telford & Wrekin Local Nature Recovery Strategy – community and specialist engagement

In November 2024, Resources for Change were commissioned by Shropshire Council to conduct a series of engagement workshops to inform the development of the Shropshire and Telford & Wrekin Local Nature Recovery Strategy (LNRS).

The LNRS are statutory strategies led by Local Authorities to improve nature and the environment, focusing funds and resources on local priorities.

A series of workshops were conducted with various stakeholders including community groups, environmental professionals, and council staff to gather feedback and ensure the strategy reflects local priorities. Workshops were held in different locations and online, targeting specific audiences to discuss draft outcomes, share information, and raise awareness about LNRS. Over 150 people were engaged in these workshops.

  • Key Findings from Area Workshops: Participants highlighted the need for better inclusion of nature recovery in planning, improved habitat connections, and increased public awareness and collaboration among stakeholders.
  • Feedback from Council Workshops: Key measures suggested included setting up Environmental Investment schemes, utilising Council land for biodiversity gain, and enhancing investment in volunteering and education.
  • Water Focus Workshop Insights: The water focus workshop emphasised the importance of water management, nature-based solutions, healthy soils, and improving data on soil functions and water quality.

The feedback from these workshops was incorporated into the priorities of the Local Nature Recovery Strategy, which will be published for public consultation in summer 2025.
