Introduction

Scott specialises in developing, delivering and evaluating heritage, environment and arts/culture place-based projects.  Since 2015, he has raised in excess of £7.5 million to help better connect people to place.

He is a Chartered Town Planner able to provide qualified advice that gets the best from the planning process, coupling this professional background with extensive experience in securing funding as a certified Fundraiser.  Underpinning these skills, Scott applies clear strategic thinking and an analytical approach to ensure concise and effective strategies and plans that have become a hallmark of his work.

Scott’s core competencies are:

  • Strategic thinking and planning: helping people see the bigger picture and articulating plans and strategies in response to need in a clear, concise way

  • Spatial planning: understanding the planning and development process and how this can be leveraged to support place-based change

  • Fundraising: supporting organisations to audit fundraising potential and develop fundraising strategies.  Includes expertise in bid writing, particularly Lottery-based funders (Heritage Fund, Arts Council England, Community Fund)

  • Business planning: enabling organisations to maximise resilience and impact through considered organisational change linked to robust evidence and research

  • Project and partnership development: focussed on heritage, environmental and arts and culture-based projects that emphasise positive change to place

Career Highlights

Prior to joining R4C in 2020, Scott worked as an independent planning consultant active predominantly in South Essex.  Over nearly ten years, he has worked with a broad range of public, private and community sector clients across the UK predominantly on planning and fundraising for place-based change.  Major successes included developing the £2.4M Land of the Fanns Landscape Partnership scheme, a £1M Creative People and Places scheme in Thurrock and facilitating local collaborative working that has unlocked £4.7M in total.

Before his independent work, Scott managed a local authority environmental planning team with a secondment as business development manager for a local environmental charity.  He became a Chartered Member of the Royal Town Planning Institute in 2014 and a Chartered Member of the Institute of Fundraising in 2018.

Other stuff

Scott lives in East Tilbury in South Essex where he is active on the committee of the Park Friends group and Bata Heritage Centre.  He is a founder member of Tilbury on the Thames Trust, which works to restore the Grade II* listed London Cruise Terminal – home of the Empire Windrush.  Scott is also a trustee of Thurrock CVS.
